The Mental Health Benefits of Pet Ownership

Most pet owners are clear about their joys that come with their companion animals. However, many of us remain unaware of the physical and mental health benefits that can also come from snuggling up to a furry (or scaly) friend. Pets have evolved to become attuned to our behavior and emotions. Here are 10 mental health benefits of having a pet:

1.     They make you feel safe

2.     They reduce anxiety and depression

3.     They provide companionship and company

4.     They add purpose and fulfillment to one’s life

5.     They provide a way to meet new people

6.     They help add structure and routine to your day

7.     They provide unconditional love

8.     They make one feel less alone in their darker moments

9.     They remind you to be present and enjoy the moment

10.  Playing with your pet elevates your serotonin levels (see, it is science!)

Despite all the benefits, it is important to remember that a pet is not a miracle cure for mental health issues (if you find one, please let me know). Owning and caring for a pet is beneficial to those to appreciate animals and have the time and money to keep a pet happy and healthy. If you are not an “animal person” there is no shame in that!

If you do not have the time, money, or ability to own a pet full time there’s options! You can ask to walk a neighbor’s dog or volunteer at an animal shelter.
