Finding a therapist that is right for YOU: 11 important qualities of a therapist.

So you have committed to needing some help. Now the search is on. Finding a therapist that “fits” can be like finding a needle in a haystack. It is so important to establish a healthy therapeutic relationship with the person that you will confide in and trust to support you to make changes in your life. So what are some signs of a “good” therapist? How do you know that you have found the one?

1.     They ask questions to deeply understand you and the origins of your mental health issue.

2.     They practice empathic listening.

3.     They create a “safe space” for you to talk and open up.

4.     They challenge you when it is appropriate.

5.     They have a great way of telling you the truth without being judgmental.

6.     They remain calm and present even when you present a challenging issue or concern.

7.     They adapt their skills to meet your needs, and collaborate on a plan to meet your individualized goals.

8.     They check in with you throughout the session to make sure you are comfortable.

9.     You can recognize the positive changes in yourself.

10.  You’ve established a healthy therapeutic relationship, and remember, a therapist is an ally, not your best friend.

11.  They are skilled in providing culturally competent care.

Establishing a therapeutic relationship is a vital step in the recovery and healing process. For the relationship to be productive, and effective, trust is key. A person seeking a therapist must trust that his or her therapist has the knowledge, skill set, and desire to provide appropriate care. Best wishes to you on finding the therapist that is the right fit for you.
